can you be on call for this server and make some easy cash?

heya,

i'm the server admin for this site that's running really smooth. part of my contract is that i'm on call in case anything goes wrong. it's a smooth running super over-powered box, fresh install (fedora core 4 with cpanel), and the chances of something going wrong are extremely unlikely.

if a service fails, and that hasn't happened yet, cpanel will restart the service. but anyhow, as part of the contract, i need someone to be on call at all times, and i'm going away this June 21 - 25th. The server is both internally and externally monitored, and if a service goes down, it SMS's my cellphone with the message right away. If I can forward that to you, that's all that would be required.

The requirement is that you have a cell on you at all times for the time that I'm gone. You must also be able to respond to emergency calls from the client (again, not likely).

I figure like $50 to cover those days is good. Basically you just make $50 for giving me your cellphone number and agreeing to cover it. If something does happen to go wrong, you'll have SSH to the server and you can go fix er up at your hourly wage (let me know what it is).

I've really put this off to way too late... so I'm hoping it works out. Otherwise, if anyone can recommend some such service, I'd be thankful. I don't want to pay for a generic reboot service cuz that wouldn't make me feel comfortable enough to go out partying for 5 days.

Thanks bloods,
hosting reliability and live support

I webmaster a simple business site.

I have a couple of problems. The company we've been hosted on (web site and email) has been sold several times and they're reliability has gotten pretty bad. Our Web site and email goes down periodically. They moved our site from one server to another several months ago and all our secure scripts no longer worked. They still haven't been able to fix it. Currently, our Email goes down regularly - like right now... and I've still been unable to get hold of a support person (on hold for the past 2 hours).

I also need some web design stuff - especially related to anything beyond basic HTML (scripts, etc.).

What I'd like to do is find a solid local SF Bay Area hosting service - or at least one that is extremely reliable for a business. And if there is a problem - the opportunity to contact someone that has a clue as to what they're doing in a reasonable amount of time.

Any suggestions or if you are the one - please let me know.

Thanks,
Root directory listing = security hole

Hi!

I read an article recently about a bug in the windows version of Apache where Apache would list the root directory of the server when it would encounter something like this:

http://webserversname///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

'The trailing slashes could cause Apache to list the root directory of the server'

So i'm not a Windows user when it comes to Apache, i've got it running under Redhat 8, and it's version 2.0.40, and guess what; it does the same thing!

Has anyone experienced this before? I guess i need newer software, but preferrably a patch if there is any.

Thanks..

apache config problem

original thread: http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=400102

Greetings people...

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I couldn't figure where to put my thread, move if needed...

I just bought a domain of one & one (great deal 7$ domain)... and I don't think you can enable a wildcard (*.mydomain.com) through them... which I usually used with apache.

I used my sub-domains for user webpages, they have full access to their root, but they have access denial to anything else...

apache config:
Code:

<VirtualHost *>
DocumentRoot d:/web/member/USERXXXXXXXX
ServerName USERXXXXXXXX.mydomain.com
User USERXXXXXXXX
Group MYGROUP_FTP
php_admin_value open_basedir "z:/web/member/USERXXXXXXXX"
</VirtualHost>

so there, that was the way I locked them... however, since 1 & 1 does not allow wildcard fowarding (or so I think, help me on this if yes),

My question is this how can I lock them to a folder... instead of a domain?

let's say I do a virtual directory of

mydomain.com/member/USERXXXXXXXX

how can he be locked to z:\web\member\USERXXXXXXXX?

(I'd need to change "ServerName USERXXXXXXXX.mydomain.com" by something that gets a folder instead of a domain)

Thanks in advance to break out your heads for me...!!!!!

new area of expertise for us...

ok, the startup I work for/own part of has just added a dedicated hosting server (with Hostgator if it matters) and we have a need to have a sales person with proper passwords have access to the ability to install software on virtual hosted domains with ownership and permissions set appropriately.

Currently we use a shell script when needed, quick easy and totally unusable by a click and drag sales kind of person.

our current ideas:
1) add a menu item to whm and have the sales person click "install our stuff" menu item. [host gator does not allow this according to top level support people who helped us get our special cgi stuff working]

2) write a php/perl script which will be run as root from a password protected page etc.

Any other ideas or problems we may run into with #2?

The script copies php and mysql from a special domain we set up, and we also update appropriate accounts from this domain using cron

Novice question regarding root level URLs

I am running Apache on Mac OS X.

I have this question that I might not be phrasing correctly but maybe someone here can help with an answer.

here is what i want to do -

i want to be able to use the back slash in a URL reference like so:

<img src="/globalimages/spacer.gif">

i want to be able to use this within a Users website, ie if i have a User on the machine and their login is wilbur, so that the URL to their website would be:

http://127.0.0.1/~wilbur

i want the URL :

src="/globalimages/spacer.gif"

to go to:

src="http://127.0.0.1/~wilbur/globalimages/spacer.gif"

AND NOT to src="http://127.0.0.1/globalimages/spacer.gif"

which is what it currenlty does.

I have combed the internet and APache places for this info and have been unsuccessful probably because i don't know how to phrase the question technically. I hope that it is something that I can tweak in the server config. file which I know how to edit and change.

The reason why I want to do this is because I develop websites for various clients and I give each client a User account and then develop the site there. The only problem is that the User account isn't at the root level of the server and therefore I can't use URLs that begin with "/" in order to refer to a global image or file like an include.

It just bugs me that I can't do it and bugs me more that I can't figure it out. Maybe if I read 500 Pages of a Apache manual I would finally find it.

I am really just looking for the answer than I am looking for references that might have the answer that I have to weed through.

Thanks

pink

httpd.conf, trying to set up VirtualHosts. Little help?

Hi folks, I'm seeking a quick consultation from anyone who has set up httpd.conf to serve multiple VirtualHosts. I've RTFM'ed and I'm clearly just missing something that I suspect someone who has done this before can point out.

This is probably in the area of exactly what is supposed to be on the NameVirtualHost, VirtualHost, and ServerName directives as well as what might go into /etc/hosts.

If someone out there has time for a quick 5-10 minute phone call, I'd really appreciate it. Please e-mail me off list.

Thanks much, Steve

At this point I am clueless to how to fix my server. If anyone has experience in this and can instruct me on how to fix it, please either contact me here or at webmaster@wprservices.com

Hi everyone. I got a shared hosting account with http://www.websitesource.net and was wondering if there is a way to set up user directories using a .htaccess file?

Basicly want to set it so that if a user goes to

http://www.digitalindreams.com/Thargor/

it would actully return what was loacted at

http://www.digitalindreams.com/users/Thargor/public_html/

Replacing Thargor of course with what ever the user name was. Thargor just happens to be the user name I use at the site I'm chat community site I'm creating.

Thanks

Anyone know of any good log analyzers that will kick out pretty charts and so forth? something freely available. As a bonus, it'd be tremendous if it could also read in gzipped rotated logs as well.

I once saw a piece of a config script that redirected attackers back to themselves.
Something like checking for a request for /MSADC/root.exe?/c+dir then redirecting to 127.0.0.1 . Has anyone seen this?

Hello Apache folks,

I'm trying to compile PHP for my Apache 2.0 installation. However, one of the things that's required is apsx - and this seems to be nowhere on my installation.

Is there a way to just get this application, or do I have to re-compile Apache 2.0 as well?

Thanks,

Anca.

How do I turn it off?

Hi there,

I have used a Mac for several years but I'm no power user. Today I was futzing around to get a "now playing" thing for my blog/MBs and enabled the webserver. Now I can't get to my home page (hosted by my ISP), it keeps taking me to the "introduction page" that comes up when you set up the web server. I can't get to the Apache manual any more either...I am not sure what I've done, frankly.

I went to the O'Reilly article that tells you how to do it and tried to retrace my steps, and I have rebooted twice: the info at start-up seems to be like it was before (i.e., it doesn't mention Apache anymore). I turned off websharing in preferences (before rebooting), and I have refreshed my browser and reloaded my index file to my host but when I go to my URL I still get that intro page.

I do not want to host my page myself, I want to keep that up at my ISP. I can only find directions to turn it on, not off, and I am at my wits' end, if anyone can help I would be so grateful.

Thanks.

Deborah

Serving from a FreeBSD box behind a DSL router on my home IP is extremely slow, on the order of an hour/meg. Other stuff over the same connection is near the full speed of a second/meg or so. Hitting the server from another box on the local network is fast. Any ideas on what is happening, or parameters I should check in the Apache, the OS, or the router?

Version Control

Anybody have experience implementing a version control system to handle a live website in conjunction with Apache 2? Specifically, I want to be able to set up a repository containing the document root of the site, and be able to serve documents from that repository. I was hoping to achieve this with Subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org) but was dismayed to discover that it doesn't play as nicely with alternate document handlers (specifically PHP) as the standard WebDAV module. Any suggestions?

Anyone setup a blog on Apache?

If so, did you go homegrown or use a download?

I am thinking of starting to blog using my server at home, and am just trying to figure out the best place to start.
I am pretty confident with PHP and mySql so if anyone is aware of something I can use to get me going, that would be great!

cheers
